Picture Consciousness

Alma is making all kinds marks on the paper.

"Alma, what are you drawing?"

"This is a hermit crab." (point to round shape with legs)  "And that is a big turtle."  (looks like a sideways "D")

"Cool, Alma."

"Now I'm going to make a big A." (she draws a big V and then a line through it)  "See, Mommy, this is also a piece of fabric hanging from the clothes drying rack."

I was recently at a talk where the teacher said that preschoolers "picture consciousness."  I'm not exactly sure what she meant, but I am amazed by the richness of Alma's visual associations and her ability to translate that onto the paper.
